“Search recorded its highest ever traffic in 25 years during the final of #FIFAWorldCup , it was like the entire world was searching about one thing!” he tweeted.

Pichai had earlier lauded both sides and termed the final match “one of the greatest games ever.”

“One of the greatest games ever. Well played Argentina and France. Jogo Bonito. Nobody deserves it more than #messi, imho the greatest ever to play the game. What a swansong,” he Tweeted after the match.

While Google Search saw record traffic, Twitter was flooded with tweets after France scored a goal against Argentina.

Twitter CEO Elon Musk said France’s first goal recorded 24,400 tweets per second, the highest ever for the World Cup.

Musk attended the final at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar. He later praised the teams, adding that he “couldn’t ask for a better game.”

Besides Pichai and Musk, Apple CEO Tim Cook also tweeted about the final, terming it “one of the greatest games I’ve ever seen.”

The high-octane clash was rather one sided for the most part, with Argentina taking a 2-0 in the first half and dominating much of the game, before France made a comeback in the 80th minute after 23-year-old Kylian Mbappe scored from the penalty spot and then volley another one into the net a minute latter, transforming the game and bring people to the edge of their seats worldwide.

Extra time saw Messi score a field goal for a change and put Argentina again in the 108th minute, only for Mbappe to level the scores again 10 minutes later with another penalty.

The game went to penalties with Gonzalo Montiel’s spot kick making sure France, which had muffed two attempts, had no way back.

Messi won the Golden Ball — best player — award after leading Argentina to victory, scoring seven goals along the way, mostly from penalties. Mbappe won the golden boot award — most goals scored — after finding the net eight times.
