Oxford Botanic Garden's Dr Chris Thorogood with the largest flower on earth - Rafflesia arnoldii 🌺 Of the 41 Rafflesia species that grow across South East Asia, this one in Indonesia's Sumatran rainforest is a metre wide. Dr Thorogood has been trekking the rainforests of Java and Sumatra alongside local botanists, in pursuit of the world's largest and most mysterious flowers, belonging to the genus Rafflesia. Kudos to Dr Thorogood for actually smiling on the photo. If the accounts of the stench this flower emits are remotely accurate, anyone less brave would have been wincing.

Why is he smiling? It's a stinky flower. 😳

Absolutely wonderful, but what evolutionary advantage does a flower that size have? Is there an optimum diameter for a flower?

Growing up, I was obsessed with that flower. If my memory serves me, doesn’t that plant only flower once ever seven years, or something like that?? I saw some wonderful things in the rainforests of Indonesia, but sadly, never saw one of these. Thanks for sharing the photo and story.
