Endangered Species: We Need to Act Now! 🦜🦝🐢🐯🐼🦥 Did you know that there are over 37,000 endangered species in the world❓ That's a lot of animals that are at risk of becoming extinct!! There are many reasons why species become endangered, but the most common are habitat loss and poaching. Habitat loss occurs when animals lose their natural homes due to deforestation, development, or other human activities. Poaching is the illegal hunting or killing of animals for their fur, meat, or other parts. Endangered species are important for our planet🌎. They play a vital role in our ecosystems, and their loss can have a ripple effect on other species. For example, if a keystone species like the African elephant goes extinct, it could lead to the collapse of the entire ecosystem. We need to act now to protect endangered species. There are many things we can do, such as: ✅Reducing our consumption of animal products ✅Supporting organizations that are working to protect endangered species ✅Getting involved in our local communities to raise awareness about endangered species ✅We all have a role to play in protecting endangered species. Species360 member Indianapolis Zoo does something extraordinary, worth sharing in my eyes. The Indianapolis Zoo Saving Species Challenge will award a $1 million grant to one organization that can develop and execute a plan that will have a measurable and sustainable impact on the survival of an animal species. The Saving Species Challenge requires the focal species to be designated by the IUCN Red List as one of the following categories: Extinct in the Wild, Critically Endangered, Endangered, or Vulnerable. The proposed project must demonstrate how this investment will give a species the greatest opportunity to be downlisted from its current conservation status to the next best designation (ex. a Critically Endangered species improving to an Endangered Species).
