Our Story: A Journey Through Time

Gove Airport, operated and maintained with care by the Nhulunbuy Corporation, has been serving this remarkable region since the 1970s. This airport is more than just a transportation hub; it's a bridge to the heart of remote East Arnhem Land.

We're proud to offer a variety of travel options, including Airnorth's E170 and E190 jet service connecting Darwin, Gove, and Cairns. For those seeking a more intimate flying experience, our smaller Brasilia 120 aircraft operate between Darwin, Groote Eylandt, and Gove.

Beyond scheduled services, Gove Airport also plays host to several aircraft charter operators, ensuring flexibility and convenience for all travellers. Additionally, we provide a full-time medical evacuation service, expertly operated by Careflight NT.

Our unique Main Terminal, designed in the shape of an aircraft, offers a warm welcome to around 50,000 passengers each year. It's a spacious, air-conditioned haven with an indoor baggage carousel. We take security seriously, with designated areas for commercial and general aviation craft.

We recognize that the land we manage belongs to the Yolngu people, and we take great pride in acknowledging and embracing the rich Aboriginal heritage that surrounds our airport.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures are an integral part of Australia's identity, and we actively celebrate and pay respect to Yolngu Elders, past, present, and emerging.

A Tribute to History

Gove Airport has a remarkable history, having served not only the public but also the Australian Defence Force. Located on the former RAAF Airfield Gove, it dates back to World War II when it was constructed in 1943 and named after Pilot Officer William Gove, a hero who gave his life in the line of duty near Maningrida.

During the war, the airfield buzzed with activity, hosting No. 83 Squadron RAAF, flying CAC Boomerangs, and No. 13 Squadron RAAF, operating Lockheed Venturas. Nearby Drimmie Head witnessed No. 42 Squadron RAAF, which operated PBY Catalina flying boats. At its peak, the base was home to over 5,000 servicemen.

It's a place rich in history and heritage, and we take great pride in preserving that legacy.

Inappropriate Jokes and Comments: Any comments, even in jest, regarding weapons or explosive devices will be taken seriously and may result in prosecution and refusal to travel.

Unattended Items: Please do not leave your baggage or personal items unattended for security reasons. Any unattended items may be removed and quarantined. Please ensure that all baggage has your name and a contact number displayed on the outside so we can get it back to you in quick time.

Your Arrival

Outside our Main Terminal, you'll find drop-off zones, taxi and bus collection areas, and ample parking for up to 80 vehicles and 30 rental cars. Everything you need for a smooth transition to your destination.

Sunflower Room

The Sunflower Room situated inside the Departure Lounge is to aid Special Assistance Guests and those with small children & babies who need a break away from the noise and bright lights of the main terminal to help them feel calm in a quieter environment.

The Sunflower Room is unlocked and available to our passengers. Guests who require use of the room can ask the Gove Enterprises Check-in Staff or any of the Airport staff inside the terminal for assistance and to be guided to the room.

Accessible Parking

Accessible parking is provided for those with limited mobility. We've positioned these spaces for easy access to the terminal building. Additionally, we have a dedicated 2-minute pick-up/drop-off area right at the front of the terminal for your convenience.

Toilets

Passengers with limited mobility will find accessible toilets inside the terminal building, conveniently located between the Arrivals and Departures areas.

Wheelchair Assistance

If you've pre-booked wheelchair assistance or need help during your flight, Airnorth staff are here to assist you. They are happy to provide wheelchairs, aircraft lifts, early boarding, and general support during your journey.

Need a vehicle for your East Arnhem Land adventure?

Gove Rentals and Mechanicals has got you covered. GRM is a car hire company that services Gove Airport. They have a desk onsite and are ready to supply you with a vehicle to suit your needs. Bookings can also be made via email at bookings@goverentals.com.au or by calling them on 08 8987 1700.

The desk is manned during flight arrivals and departures, however if unattended give them a ring direct.

Taxi

If you're looking for a cab, Gove Taxis are just a call away. They can be contacted at 131 008 if you are in Nhulunbuy, or 08 8987 1144 if calling from outside of Nhulunbuy.

Smoking Areas

We get it - sometimes you need a break. But hey, no worries; we've got your back at Gove Airport! We're all about providing a comfy and smoke-free indoor environment, so smoking inside the terminal is a no-go.

But here's the good news for our smoking buddies: we've set up some super convenient designated smoking areas just for you.

Head on outside and wander down to either end of the terminal building where you'll find dedicated smoking spots on both the right and left sides of the building.

We're all about fresh air and courtesy, so we kindly ask that you use these designated smoking areas. Your fellow travellers will thank you, and we'll keep the atmosphere just right for everyone!
