Our Dog Cat Meat Trade 🐕🐈🍖 Campaign Highlights in 2023 While all of our successes ⭐ last year stand for themselves as smaller and larger wins, seeing them all combined will give you a better picture of everything that has happened in the past 12 months in the fight against the dog and cat meat trade (DCMT)! Before we send you off to the full report, here are some of the highlights: ✅ 2 MILLION people worldwide have signed our petition to end the DCMT in Southeast Asia ✅ 16,000 Vietnamese citizens ran over 2 million kilometres in total as part of a virtual run against the DCMT. ✅ 18,000 people from the UK and USA wrote to their ambassador in Vietnam pleading for their support to stop the suffering of dogs and cats. ✅ In May, FOUR PAWS became the first international animal welfare organisation to join the One Health Partnership for Zoonoses Control in Vietnam. ✅ In Indonesia, following continued lobbying by the Dog Meat Free Indonesia coalition, of which FOUR PAWS is a member, 26 more cities and regencies issued directives banning the DCMT. ✅ FOUR PAWS’ two-year collaboration with Hoi An People’s Committee to phase out the DCMT from the city was completed. ✅ In December, FOUR PAWS closed one of the last remaining dog meat restaurants in Hoi An. 76% of our world’s land surface is habitable land and 45% is used for agriculture! 🚜 80% of the world’s agricultural land is used for feed production and grazing pastures for farm animals. 🐄 We’ve turned our earth 🌎 into a giant farm with far too many farm animals. Why does this matter? Because so much of this agricultural land is used to feed animals for our meat and dairy 🥩🥛 consumption, the agriculture sector is the most dominant driver of environmental degradation, biodiversity loss and a potent emitter of GHG emissions. These human-caused methane emissions heat up the climate much quicker and more intensively than CO2. 🐄💨 Fortunately, most crop land available is currently used to produce animal feed, and could instead be used to grow healthy, plant-based foods like grains, vegetables, or legumes for human consumption. If everyone consumed less meat and dairy products, we could free up to 75% of agricultural land. More people would be fed, fewer animals would have to die, and as this would take up less land, we could allow nature to recover in the areas we no longer use. 🚨 Historic win for animals: Australia and the United Kingdom make huge leaps to protect animals in transport. 🇦🇺 Australia has announced that they plan to ban the cruel live exports of sheep from 2028! This is a huge celebration for the hundreds of thousands of sheep who are exported every year from the country 🐑. Sheep trapped on live exports undergo horrendous journey over days or weeks on open seas, only to meet a grim fate at their destination where they're killed under awful welfare conditions . 🇬🇧 Just days later, the United Kingdom announced that the Animal Welfare (Livestock Exports) Bill has passed its final stage in Parliament, meaning it’s set to become law! Ending the export of animals by road or ship from the UK for slaughter and fattening overseas📜. But with two hugely progressive countries making waves, where does this leave the EU, as a self-proclaimed forerunner in animal welfare, yet still the world’s biggest live animal exporter? It’s finally time to end this cruel practice for good! Change is possible. Ending the Dog 🐕🍖🐈and Cat Meat Trade in Hoi An, Vietnam  In 2021, FOUR PAWS embarked on a transformative journey in Hoi An 🇻🇳, signing a 2-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Hoi An People's Committee. As our partnership comes to an end, we celebrate the remarkable achievements and milestones attained during this impactful period.    We administered thousands of vaccinations 💉 and provided free of charge sterilisations for cats and dogs. Through billboards, leaflets and media campaigns, we raised awareness of the deadly disease rabies as well as the cruel dog and cat meat trade. And finally, we closed down one of the last remaining dog meat restaurants in the city.    Together, we’ve worked tirelessly to create a safer, more compassionate environment for animals and humans alike.    #ProtectMillions #DogCatMeatTrade #Dog #Cat

Kosovo 🇽🇰 faces problems with its massive stray 🐕 dog population. In the capital city of Prishtina alone, an estimated 3,000 stray dogs roam the streets in a daily struggle to find food and shelter. With basically no access to medical 🩺 treatments or regular sources of nourishment, life for these dogs is hard enough already. They are facing numerous dangers such as starving or freezing to death, drowning in poison rivers, getting hit in traffic 🚗 or being attacked by other dogs. This is why in 2023 FOUR PAWS prepared a trip to Kosovo to get some help to these animals and support the local communities in dealing with the stray animal population. A group of highly skilled vets and dog catchers from our nearby 🇧🇬 Bulgarian team was sent over for a 10 day mission. Together with local partner Pro Vet Gjakove and with the support of StrayCoCo, we wanted to provide sterilisations, vaccinations 💉 and other treatments. We were able to treat 253 animals together! However, Kosovo needs a long-term solution to tackle the problem of its exploding stray care population. Therefore, we are working on that now, together with local stakeholders and partners such as Animal Rights Foundation. An animal 🐅 IS MORE than the sum of its parts. 🦴 It is a breathing, living, sentient being who feels the pain of living a cramped life in a small cage before meeting its tragic end. And for what? This majestic animal who would normally live among the trees, outrun its prey, and bask in the sunlight ☀️... Does not have skin that looks better as a rug on your floor. Does not have bones that work better as the jewelry around your neck. Does not have meat that’s an experience as a food dish on your plate. 🍽️ This animal’s essence can never be broken down into these “luxury items” and still reflect the magnitude of this animal’s being when it was once alive.
