Wartime History
Starting on May 7, 1942 the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) occupied the airfield known as RAAF Nowra or Nowra Airfield and included a RAAF torpedo school. Also used by the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) and Royal Netherlands East Indies Air Force (NEIAF). During the middle of 1942, several USAAF B-26 Marauder operated from the base to conduct aerial torpedo training including B-26 40-1403 and B-26 40-1488.

During late October 1944, used by the Royal Navy (RN) Fleet Air Arm (FAA) and the base was renamed HMAS Nabbington and used as a Mobile Naval Operating Air Base (MONAB). Also known as "MONAB I" or Royal Naval Air Station Nowra (RNAS Nowra).

Postwar
During March 1946, the Base reverted to RAAF control, "to be retained but not maintained." On July 3, 1947 the Commonwealth Defence Council approved the formation of a Fleet Air Arm which would be controlled and operated by the Royal Australia Navy (RAN) at this location. In 1948, renamed HMAS Albatross as the primary shore base for the Fleet Air Arm.
