At about 10,000 ft. above sea level in Huanglong, China where the view is Alpine, we have breathtaking views of these pools.
They are literally breathtaking, as at this level, we were short of breath (oxygen).
This is how Wikipedia describes it:
Huanglong Valley 黄龙沟 – The total length of the travertine in Huanglong Valley is 3.6 km and it is thought to look like a huge golden dragon wheeling through the snow-capped mountains of the valley. The main landscapes are travertine banks, colorful ponds and travertine waterfalls and caves. The main body of water starts from the ancient Buddhist/Benbo temple at the top of the valley and ends at the Guests Welcome Pond in the north with a length of 2.5 km and a width of 30–170m. The colours of Huanglong’s waters consist of yellows, greens, blues and browns.
On these two pictures, I am showing the blue waters.
This is in sharp contrast to the Pamukkale travertines I showed in my last post.
Up here, the scenes are more Alpine and tranquil.
Oh, my. Wow! Beautiful!
Glad that you like it, Darla!
Alpine yes, but unmistakably China. (says a man who has never been) Delightful.
Yes, China at around 10,000 feet above sea level!
what a terrible life you do lead!
You mean wonderful!
yes I actually do, well spotted 🙂 beautiful places beautiful photos, I would love to see those terraces in real life one day, but they are quite far away from here..
It is quite a bit of travel. However, the place is assessable by plane. The Huanglong airport could be one of the highest airport in the world.
ok well that is good to know its not fly to one of the famous ones and then take a train up the mountain 🙂 I will check it out, thank you Michael
But be aware of high attitude sickness!
aha true, so train up would be better then!
No sure there are trains going up. You can do a few stops on the way, easing the transition or take some Chinese herbal medicine before the trip.
ok I will be sure to keep that in mind. thanks for all the tips Michael, much appreciated
You are welcome 🙂
Breathtaking!
Thank you 🙂

Another world among the mountains.
Like to live among the mountains!
Hi Michael,
Those are lovely pictures. I love the roof top in the distance of the second picture.

Yes, speechless and also breathless!
Absolutely stunning! Adding this to my wishlist of places to see in person.
Glad that you add it to your wish list; I am sure you will enjoy it!
Wow!
🙂
Some lovely photographs. Thank you.
Thank you for the perusal!
These pools take my breath away also!
Glad that you like the photos 🙂
Otherworldly was the description that popped first into my mind when I saw these amazing colours. Like Turner’s landscapes where the colours are made more vibrant by the sunlight he seems to be able to inject into his paintings. You are such a lucky person to have seen this (even if you struggled with lack of oxygen and altitude sickness on the way up)!
The worst part of the trip was landing at the Huanglong airport which is sort of 5000m above sea level – there is not much transition – you have the required oxygen on the plane, suddenly you stepped out of the plane and found that there was a lot less of it!
Serves you right for travelling “budget” and not upgrading to include oxygen tanks with your “Air Cheap-as-Chips” ticket, she grins:)
Oh bother, I think I may have just given those guys at Ryanair an idea!
🙂
WOW! Absolutely incredible! Another place added to my list of places to see- which is getting extremely long, just from your blog photos!! 🙂 Thank you for posting!
Wish you would successfully visit and enjoy the places!
Another amazing place michael lai! Where have you not been?? Beautiful!
Still many places near and far which I haven’t been!
