Experience a rare guided tour of Nakimu Caves

Opportunities to visit the restricted Nakimu Caves near Rogers Pass are rare, but Parks Canada has granted Canmore Cave Tours a rare license for a one-day adventure on Aug. 29, and you’re invited.

Parks Canada has granted Canmore Cave Tours a rare license to offer a guided tour of Nakimu Caves at Rogers Pass this summer. Due to the highly restricted nature of the cave, the tour on August 29 will be one of the first opportunities in years for the general public to visit one of Canada’s great caves.

Canmore Cave Tours has been offering wild cave tours in Canmore, Alberta for the past 22 years, but it wasn’t until this summer that the permit for Nakimu was made available. The company strives to offer new experiences to customers to help increase awareness of caves and the sport of caving.

Owner Adam Walker is excited to be able to offer a Nakimu tour this year. Canmore Cave Tours has partnered with Cody Cave Tours, who operate out of Nelson, B.C., to co-guide the tour and to help increase exposure for the experience.

Visiting Nakimu is not an easy feat. There is a four-hour approach to the cave (and a four-hour return hike), but the long walk is well worth the effort. Nakimu is a very special place. The word is a native Shuswap meaning ‘Grumbling Spirits,’ which refers to the sounds of the water as is rumbles its way through the cave.

A trip through Nakimu lasts approximately four hours and includes visits to places such as Mica Schist Passage, the Subway and the Witches Ballroom before exiting above the spectacular Gorge Entrance. Visitors will see Moonmilk, blue marbleized limestone, delicate cave formations and beautifully sculpted passages.

The cave still hosts remnants from the days of Charles Deutchman — the original explorer of Nakimu — when Nakimu actually hosted hundreds of visitors per year as a show cave. Even though many of the old structures were removed years ago there are still hints of walkways and ladders in the cave dating back to the early 1900s.

The tour meets and departs at the Rogers Pass Information Centre. All caving equipment is provided including helmets and lights, kneepads, gloves, coveralls and backpacks, and the tour is led by experienced cave guides. Participants provide food, water, appropriate clothing and footwear for the day as well as their sense of adventure.

The price for the tour is $199 per person.
