Public airport located 40 km north of Belo Horizonte. Airport replaced Pampulha airport as a primary commercial airport of the region. Construction started in 1980 just east of Confins municipality. First aircraft landed on airport on July 15 1982. Scheduled passenger flights commenced in 1984. Airport was renamed in 1986 to Aeroporto Internacional Tancredo Neves. Airport was largely underutilized because it was much further from the city. Despite being overcrowded, Pampulha was preferred by airlines and passengers. Government had to issue limit on size of the aircraft serving Pampulha to force more traffic to move to Confins. Airport is since 2013 operated by AeroBrasil a consortium comprising CCR Group. Munich Airport and Zurich Airport. Major maintenance base of Gol Linhas Aereicas. |
