Public airport located 17 km NE of Calgary CBD. Airport handled over 15 million passengers in 2015. Calgary's first airfield was established in 1914 at Bowness. This airfield was replaced in 1928 by Municipal airport which was located at Renfrew. In 1938 the Municipal airport was moved to this location and named McCall Field in honor of World War I Ace pilot - Captain Fred McCall. Its passenger terminal was inaugurated in 1956 and was located at what is now called apron 6. In 1966 City of Calgary sold the airport to the Federal Government (Transport Canada). Today's terminal building located at the northern perimeter was opened in 1977. It has been upgraded and expanded numerous times since. Parallel runway 17L - 35R was completed in 2014 and is the longest in Canada. International terminal which is adjacent east of the existing terminal was opened on October 31 2016. Airport also features aviation Museum and an outdoor observation area both of which are located near runway 35L. |
