Civil airport of entry located 3 km west of Ramsgate seaside town. Between 1916 and 1996 airport was known as RAF station Manston, named after village just NE of the airport. USAF took over the airport between 1952 and 1958. Airport has major airliner maintenance and storage facilities. It has been used by British Airways for crew training of their A380 and 787 aircraft. Ministry of Defense operates fire training school at the former station. Since 1989 airport had civilian ramp which was initially marketed as Kent International airport. It was used mainly by seasonal charter airlines, KLM, EUjet and Flybe were among few that operated scheduled service. Kent International airport is closed since 15 May 2014. Airport runway and taxiways are now used to park commercial trucks that are waiting to cross the English Channel. |
