Largest transport base in RAF. Air Base is located 20 km west of Oxford and about 100 km NW of London. Building commenced 1935 and opened in 1937 as training base. Used in WW2 as repair station and training for multi-engined aircraft. Handed over to USAF 1953 as SAC base. B36 ,B47 , B52, KC97 and KC135 aircraft stationed there. Returned to RAF 1965. RAF Transport command relocated to Brize 1967. Home to 10, 53, 99, 101, 216, & 511 Squadrons. (VC10, Britannia, Comet, Belfast Andover) Was home to 10 & 101 Sqd (VC10) 216 Sqd (TriStar) Received the Lyneham wing (C130) Late 2011 Current base of RAF A330MRTT and A400M forces & 99 Sqd (C17) |
