Public airport located 3 km SE of central Mogadishu. Airport was built in 1928 by Italian military to serve Italian Somaliland. It is the oldest airport in Somalia.
During the 1960s, 70s and 80s airport prospered and was connected to many destinations including in Europe. After the collapse of Siad Barre's regime country plunged into civil war.
Airport was closed in 1995 after United Nations forces withdrew. Airport re-opened in July 2006 and first airline service commenced in August.
In June 2007 airport was renamed in honor of Aden Abdullah Osman Daar, the first president of Somalia.
Airport closed again between 2008 and 2011 due to renewed fighting. In 2013 airport operation was handed to Turkish contractor Favori LLC. In 2014 airport renovation started. New terminal, immigration facility, hotel and aviation training academy are under construction expected to be completed sometime in 2015.
Airport can now handle only VFR flights.
