Largest airport in Iceland and Iceland's primary international gateway. Airport is located 50 km west of capital Reykjavik just SW of town of Keflavik. Airport was built by U.S. military during World War II. Just southeast of the airport U.S. Army Air Force built another airport called Patterson Field which was used primarily as a repair station between 1942 and 1945. During the Cold War, airport was an important U.S. Navy Air Station. Until 1987 its civilian terminal was located within the NAS and passengers had to go through a check point. |
