Public airport located 11 km WNW of downtown Prague. Airport construction commenced in July 1932 and was completed in March 1937. Ruzyne opened in April 1937 replacing Kbely as the primary commercial airport of Prague. First aircraft, a DC-2 from Piestany via Zlin and Brno arrived in the morning of April 5th 1937. The original terminal, now called South or Old by locals, won gold medal at International Art and Technology Exhibit in Paris. It is now together with the original control tower a historic landmark. Rwy 22-04 is not used today only for parking although it used to be the primary runway. The South terminal is used for general aviation and VIP traffic, the terminal has been renovated with new addition. The original 1930's building with tower remains and is protected as a landmark.
In the 1960s, VPU (Army Corps of Engineers) designed and built the North Terminal, Hangar F (north of 22), extended runway 31 and built new runway 07-25 which is now 06-24 because of the magnetic pole shift. Construction commenced in 1964 and when completed Ruzyne's North Terminal, which was officially inaugurated on June 15 1968, was one of the most modern in Europe and had capacity 2.3 million passengers. During most of its life Ruzyne handled between 1 and 2 million passengers annually. Pier A was completed in 1997 which increased airport capacity to 5 million passengers annually. The Terminal 2 construction started in spring 2003. By 2005 airport was handling 10 million passengers annually. Terminal 2 opened in 2006.
New Cargo complex was built south of taxiway A. Multilevel garage, hotel/conference center, office building and the headquarters of CSA now dominate the skyline.
Last remaining viewing terrace has been eliminated because of the construction of Terminal 2. Spotting is possible along the northwest side of the 24-06 and near the VOR. Both places are hard to reach on foot. There is also field road near 31 threshold, but sun is in view after dawn hours. Airport officials are mostly pleasant and rarely order you to leave. There is restaurant on upper level with nice view to the northwest and few spots along curbside east of the terminal. Upper level of parking garage is monitored with restricted access.
In 2015 airport handled 12,030,928 passengers and 128,078 aircraft movements.
In 2018 airport handled 16,797,006 passengers and 155,530 aircraft movements.
