Former US Air Force base that closed in 1991. It has been converted to civilian airport. It is located 78 km NW of Manila just NE of town of Angeles and at the eastern foot of Mt. Pinatuba - an active volcano that erupted in June 1991. It was the second largest volcano eruption of 20th century covering the airport with thick layer of volcanic ash. U.S.A.F abandoned the field thereafter. Hub for cargo and low cost operators serving Manila. Airport is located in Clark Freeport Zone. Between 2003 and 2008 it was named D. Macapagal International after then presidents father. The passenger terminal 1 is still named after him. Since Manila's primary interntional N. Aquino International reached its capacity and can not be expanded this airport may become Manila's primary airport. New passenger terminal and high speed rail link with the city of Manila are planned. |
