Public airport with mixed civil/military use located in suburbs of Guildford 10 km ENE of downtown Perth. It was built on a former golf course for RAAF between 1942-43 to support the war effort. Airport replaced first Perth airport Maylands which was in use from 1924 to June 1963. Most commercial flights moved to Guildford already in 1944. Airport was renamed Perth International in September 1952 and the first passenger terminal opened in 1953. Present day international terminal and the control tower opened in October 1986. It is the 4th busiest airport in Australia with nearly 14.5 million passengers and 131,000 movements handled in 2019. It is since July 1997 administered by Perth Airport Pty under a 99 year lease from the Commonwealth Government. |
