Public airport located 12 km SE of Derby and 20 km SW of Nottingham. It is former WWII RAF Castle Donington air field that closed in 1946. In 1963 East Midlands Airport Committee purchased it to replace Burnaston Aerodrome. Construction commenced in 1954 as airport reopened in April 1965 as a civilian airport. Second busiest cargo handling airport in U.K. after London Heathrow largely because of DHL Aviation base which grew out of ELAN facilities that opened in 1984. Airport was privatized in 1993 and sold to National Express Group. Cargo Terminal 4 opens in 1997. In 2000 DHL opens its hub at ‘Cargo West’ and runway is extended to today's 2,800m. In 2001 Aeropark aviation museum opens. Airport is now owned and managed by MAG (Manchester Airport Group) which also operates London Stansted and Manchester airports. |
