1. In Syracuse, Biden announces $6.1B in federal funds for Micron Technology for memory computer chip production

President Joe Biden traveled to Syracuse, New York, on Thursday — home of his law school alma mater, Syracuse University — to announce $6.1 billion in federal funding for Micron Technology to boost the production of advanced memory computer chips. 

2. 'The future has arrived': Biden, local and state officials tout CHIPS funding, 'workforce hub' designation as transformative for CNY

President Biden, running for re-election this year, said Micron's investment is the answer many similar manufacturing communities and regions have been hoping for after decades of seeing factories close and jobs move overseas. That was a big highlight made by other New York officials on Thursday.

3. Biden to meet with families of fallen law enforcement in Syracuse

In his opening remarks Thursday in Syracuse, President Joe Biden recalled the law enforcement officers recently killed in Salina as "two fallen heroes," and planned to meet with their families, authorities said. Biden met with the families of Syracuse police officer Michael Jensen and Onondaga County Sheriff Deputy Lt. Michael Hoosock, as well as Onondaga County Sheriff Toby Shelley.

4. Pro-Palestinian protesters decry Biden's support for Israel ahead of Syracuse visit

Dozens of people protesting the Biden administration's support for Israel descended on downtown Syracuse Thursday morning across the street from the site of the president's afternoon visit to the city. Organizers from the Democratic Socialists of America and other local pro-Palestinian groups called for protests to form, saying in a press release earlier in the week that they "object to tax dollars being used repeatedly to fund Israel's bombardment of Gaza while local communities face poverty and insecurity."

5. Southwest ends operations at Hancock Airport

Southwest Airlines will not operate at Syracuse Hancock International Airport after August 4. The airline told the Syracuse Regional Airport Authority that, as part of what it called intensifying "network optimization efforts to address underperforming markets," it would cease operations in four airports — Hancock, Bellingham (Wash.) International Airport, Cozumel International Airport and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston.

6. New York appeals court overturns Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction from landmark #MeToo trial

New York’s highest court on Thursday overturned Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction, finding the judge at the landmark #MeToo trial prejudiced the ex-movie mogul with “egregious” improper rulings, including a decision to let women testify about allegations that weren’t part of the case.

7. Live Updates: Trump hush money trial resumes

Former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker recalled an irate Donald Trump calling him a day after The Wall Street Journal published an article shortly before the 2016 election. Pecker's testimony came in his third day on the stand in Trump's hush money trial in New York, and as arguments at the Supreme Court in Washington in a separate case over Trump's presidential immunity were concluding.
