3 Types of Fruits MUST Eat in Sabah, Borneo.

During my time as a Tour Guide, one of my favorite topic to share with the guest is our Exotic Fruits in Sabah. Today I would like to do that. This fruit I'm gonna share is seasonal, those days it's abundant to find them, too many that even locals don't want to buy it. However, come 2018, it is so hard to find them, it is because it has been promoted by Chinese Tour Guides now, and Chinese Tourist pays lots of money for the Rare Species of Fruits. With this new revelation, the villagers will keep and sell directly to Chinese at a better price rather putting them at the stall's to sell.

Nonetheless, in Sunday Market and Tamu Market, villagers will still sell them, but you need to be fast, as many people looking to buy these exotic fruits too.

1.TARAP

Tarap is Fruits that grows wild abundantly in lowland jungle, this fruit one of my favorite when it's on a good season, it sells around RM3-RM5 per kilo. However, if not in season, the price can reach up to RM50 per kilo (in a tourist area). Its taste like Guava I should say maybe in between Guava and Soursop Fruit. There's a seed inside it, some people will fry it and eat it. Usually, this fruits will be harvest during year-end (November and December) The flesh is soft, sweet and tender, it's easy to open, unlike a durian. Tarap also can found in the Philipines, they call it "Marang"

2.Bambangan (Wild Borneo Mango)

I grew up seeing this fruit in my village. This is called Bambangan (Wild Mango). This fruit is ONLY can be found in Borneo even some Malaya friends tried to plant in West Malaysia orchard, it did not grow and died along the way. This fruit is so populated to make a dish called "Hinava". It can be eaten Raw, but I prefer to have other condiments mix with it, for me it tastes better. Some people tried to make it Juice already, I personally haven't tried it yet. This fruits also been popularised to be a Killing Breast Cancer Cell. Imagine when you tell this to the Chinese Tourist, they wack it like eating rice. This fruits bear in April-May-June-July, I can say almost all year round depending on the district.

3.Orange and Red Durian

As we all know the King of Fruit "Durian", this durian species will bear the color Red and Orange. The local name for this fruit is called Durian Dalit (Orange) and Durian Sukang (Red). It is so much sought after, Chinese Tourist willing to pay RM200-RM300 for 1kg. No joke, its true. As exotic it is seen in real, the taste also differ from the normal durian we have. The Flesh and Seed are rather small compared to the normal durians in the market. I wrote a post before about durians, there are about 200 species of durian registered. This durian only can be found in low to the mid-altitude jungle and it's not easy to plant this types durian, its to have the right soil and temperature. Every year-end will be a month of joy for the locals and tourist as we can indulge this type of durian.

So, these are my top 3 exotic fruits you must try when you in Sabah holiday. I would say it a must to eat actually because you would not find it elsewhere.

The Tarap fruit looks a little like the chempadak fruit in Peninsula Malaysia but yellow in color. But I have not seen 2.Bambangan (Wild Borneo Mango) before. Though I have seen Durian but never eaten in Sabah though

I have actually not seen or heard of any of these fruits... I would love to try them! I remember years ago (many many) when I first went to Sabah (and Sarawak) - that was the first time I came across the salak fruit. At that time, they hadn't brought it to the semenanjung, so we didn't have any here, unlike now. I went to a tamu, and it was fascinating seeing all the different things there... It's been years since my last trip... I must go again soon... :)
