World Update XV: Nordics & Greenland plus Saab B 17 out for MSFS

A big day for Microsoft Flight Simulator fans as the next World Update and Local Legend have arrived. Let’s talk the details on World Update XV and on the Saab B 17. Let’s go!

Nordics update

A new World Update is out and it looks like this is going to be a good one. We’ve already had a World Update in this region before, however, the MSFS team were not fully satisfied with the result as they had hoped to get more data to improve the visuals of the region. The second go around seems to have hit the mark as the trailer can attest.

Features for the new update include 90 hand-made points of interest, 10 TIN (triangulated irregular network) cities, 5 hand-crafted airports, fresh aerial imagery, high resolution geographic updates and enhanced DEM (digital elevation models) for Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

There’s also four new discovery flights, three landing challenges, and three bush trips.

Hand crafted airports include Akureyri Airport (BIAR) in Iceland, Mo i Rana Airport (ENRA) and Leknes Airport (ENLK) in Norway, Kiruna Airport (ESNQ) in Sweden and Ivalo Airport (EFIV) in Finland.

The “other” B 17

If you’re a warbird fan, you’ve definitely heard of the Boeing B-17 but have you heard of Saab’s B 17 dive bomber and reconnaissance aircraft? Well you have now! Sweden was a neutral country during WWII and that meant that they had to maintain their own independent military. Some aircraft rose to fame within the country and Saab’s B 17 was a successful type.

The B 17 was briefly operated by the Danish Brigade, a small force of 5,000 soldiers and 50 pilots, with the intent of taking back Denmark from Nazi occupation. The general surrender on May 7, 1945 prevented the type from seeing action there and the aircraft were returned.

The Ethiopian Air Force operated a fleet of 47 until 1968.

Five of the aircraft still exist. This should be an interesting airplane to check out with developer iniBuilds having completed the work on it.

Is it just me or is the download speed of content updates for MSFS still screwed? 250mb connection but lucky to get >2-3mb throughput from the MSFS servers (everything else is absolutely fine)
