Fotografiska Talks: Fashion Photography in the World and Estonia

Two-part talk about fashion photography:

Part 1 - Flying in to Tallinn, the world-renowned portrait and fashion photographer Vincent Peters, who will discuss the role and legacy of the legendary photographer Peter Lindbergh in fashion photography and beyond. Joining Vincent on stage is Aleksander Eeri Laupmaa, the host of the popular series "Fotografiska Talks".

Part 2 - We'll travel back to Estonia from the global paths and talk about the legacy created and still being created by the legendary Estonian photographer Toomas Volkmann, as well as his role in the Estonian fashion world. The conversation with Toomas Volkmann will be led by Anu Merila, the executive editor of the magazine "Eesti Naine", and Marion Laev, the head of the EKA Fashion Design Management Department.

About the Speakers:

Vincent Peters was born in 1969 in Bremen, Germany, but moved to New York in his twenties and started working as a photo assistant. After some time, he moved back to Europe, and in 1999, his career as a fashion photographer began. Soon he was shooting worldwide campaigns for brands like Miu Miu, Yves Saint Laurent, and Bottega Veneta. Over time, this list expanded, and Peters collaborated with major fashion houses such as Dior, Louis Vuitton, Hugo Boss, Emporio Armani, L’Oréal, Lancôme, Nike, and Levi’s. Vincent Peters' exhibition "Inner Light" was held at Fotografiska in Tallinn in 2019 and was met with great success and enthusiasm from the audience.

Toomas Volkmann is a legendary Estonian photographer who has studied at both the University of Tartu and the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. Since 1995, he has been a freelance photographer, collaborating with practically all Estonian media outlets. Until March 10th, the exhibition "Full of the Past" by Toomas Volkmann is on display at Fotografiska, characterized by a symbolically dense visual language, allowing for strongly charged image constellations. He is simultaneously theatrical and discreet, morbid and life-affirming, grandly dramatic and penetratingly intimate.

Anu Merila is the fashion and executive editor of the magazine "Eesti Naine". Fashion, especially fashion history through the prism of pop culture, has fascinated her throughout her life. Anu's sensitive sense of beauty was needed as the editor-in-chief of magazines like Stiil and Marie Claire. She has also taught fashion media at the Estonian Academy of Arts stylist course.

Marion Laev is the head of the EKA Fashion Design Management Department and a fashion lecturer. With diverse interests, Marion has studied economics and fashion, curated several fashion exhibitions at the KUMU and Estonian History Museum. As a valued stylist, she has styled cover stars and fashion series for all Estonian women's magazines.
