Canadian Rockies, Here We Come

I’ve got lots to share about our pre-tour in Calgary and our time with Adventures In Tandem. But first, some exciting and happy news: Elliott and Skye got married in July! It was a weekend of love and celebration in Athens, GA.

The official pics aren’t in yet, thanks to Bev for snapping this during the ceremony! We wish them much love and happiness for all time!

Now we return to our regularly scheduled programming! We were anxious about the weather since our last visit to Canada (in June) was marred by lots of cold and rain. But the weather gods seem to be smiling upon us this month. Preceding our official nine day tour we arrived in Calgary about five days early to acclimate to the altitude and enjoy the amazing cycling infrastructure.

I know what you’re thinking, and you are correct – we are NOT traveling light! Those two giant silver cases contain our trusty, (and just a tiny bit rusty) coupled Erickson tandem.

This will turn into a tandem in around two hours!
Here are the frame parts after they are unwrapped, now you get the idea!

We are on the first part of this adventure with Mitzi and John, our frequent travel companions. Then we will meet up with eight other tandems and our tour leaders for a nine day Adventures In Tandem (AIT) Tour. Much more on the tour later. This post is about our fun pre-tour explorations of Calgary.

We enjoyed great riding. The bike paths and bridges in this city are quite extensive. We are told there are upwards of six hundred miles of bike infrastructure maintained by the city. We gratefully thank the taxpayers of this city for (happily) paying to keep Calgary a bicycle friendly spot.

Many will be relieved to know there was ice cream. We enjoyed delicious soft serve right along the path.

The Peace Bridge, built in 2012 to facilitate cycle commuting for Calgary residents, was a highlight for us. We rode through it several times.

A distinctive design from the outside

The inside is pretty cool also. Repair work is underway as you can see, the locals told us that (sadly) the windows were vandalized and it will cost millions to replace them.

Before we joined up with our AIT tour group we took some time to visit a Calgary landmark since 1968.

It’s the Calgary Tower, located right in the center of the city
There are awesome views of the city. Here is a look at the Saddledome.

They also have one of those creepy clear observation areas where you can see what’s below – if you are brave enough to step on it. Don’t look down, John!

In our next post the adventure continues as we meet up with the AIT crew.

  1. Looks like another great tour. We’ve just spent the month of August exploring from Niagara Falls Canada to PEI, Cape Breton and New Brunswick. Look forward to seeing you tour this part of Canada.
