NEW DELHI: Air India’s New York (Newark)-Delhi nonstop (AI 106) with over 300 people on board safely diverted to Stockholm on Wednesday after the Boeing 777 had an engine leak in one of its engines. The Stockholm airport made all arrangements for this emergency landing like stationing fire tenders and other personnel.
“Following the oil leak, the engine of this B777-300 extended range aircraft was shut down and it safely landed in Stockholm.
During ground checks, oil was seen coming out of the drain mast from engine number two. A detailed inspection is in progress,” said a senior Directorate General of Civil Aviation official.
In a statement, AI said the flight “faced a technical issue and was diverted to Stockholm early Wednesday morning with 284 pax and eight infants on board. The flight landed safely at the Stockholm airport. Passengers have been provided lounge access and meals. Immigration procedure of passengers is being carried out to ensure their stay at the city's hotels. Meanwhile, the aircraft is being thoroughly checked to address the technical issue.”
This was the second diversion of Air India’s New York-Delhi nonstops this week. On Monday a flight was diverted to London Heathrow due to medical emergency on board.
