At the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, Rani Mukherjee revealed that she had suffered a miscarriage in 2020, reported Business Today. The Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway actor suffered the tragedy right before she was approached for the film.

Mukherjee, who is married to Indian filmmaker Aditya Chopra and shares a daughter, Adira, with him, spoke about how she got pregnant for the second time in her life but lost the baby five months into the pregnancy: “I got pregnant at the end of 2020 and unfortunately lost my baby five months into my pregnancy.”.

The Kuch Kuch Hota Hai actor also shared that this was the first time she was publicly sharing any information about the tragedy she suffered through. She went on to say that her reluctance to speak about this earlier was due to the current era of public information being open to constant scrutiny and people’s tendency to view such revelations by actors as tactics to promote their upcoming films.

“Maybe this is the first time I am making this revelation because in today’s world. Obviously, I didn’t speak about this when I was promoting the film because it would have come across as me trying to speak about a personal experience that would propel the film.”

At the festival, she also spoke about how the producer of Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway called her to offer her the role of Debika Chatterjee just ten days after she had lost the baby. With the despair of having lost a child fresh in her mind, the script really resonated with Rani: “Not that I had to have the loss of a child to feel the emotion but, sometimes, there is a film [that echoes] what you are going through personally, [and you] connect with it instantly.”
