Boryspil in the second year of war: what does the airport look like now?

Boryspil International Airport, a former leader in passenger traffic, is now strikingly empty. In his program "The World Inside Out", host Dmytro Komarov showed the devastation of Terminal D, which was devastated by the full-scale invasion. Find out what the airport looks like now, where life used to be in full swing

In his TV program "The World Inside Out" Ukrainian presenter Dmytro Komarov recently presented viewers with exceptional footage of the devastated Terminal D. Instead of its former lively and energetic life, Boryspil Airport is now a zone of emptiness and silence. Here is how the destructive force of war and invasion changed the image of the airport.

Boryspil during the russian invasion

Boryspil Airport ceased operations on February 24, 2022, when the russian federation launched its full-scale invasion and rocket attacks on Ukraine.

All flights were canceled, and this international air traffic hub was deserted. Only three aircraft were able to take off from the airport - only as part of evacuation flights.

Initially, on December 20, 2022, Turkey organized the evacuation of two Airbus A400 military transport aircraft that arrived at the airport on the night of February 23-24, 2022, but were blocked due to the closure of Ukraine's airspace.

Later, on April 4, 2023, the Ukrainian airline SkyUp successfully evacuated a Boeing 737-800 from Boryspil Airport to Romania.

This plane was the only aircraft of the airline that remained in Ukraine at the time of the russian invasion.

How has the airport changed since the beginning of the war?

In the second year of the war, when the ring of terror and uncertainty continues, and the country's borders remain closed to mass passenger traffic, Boryspil Airport is one of the symbols of halted life and loss.

The international aviation hub that once pulsed with the heart of the Chinese capital now stands empty.

Before the full-scale invasion of russian troops, Boryspil Airport was a real living organism filled with movement.

Terminal D, which until February 24, 2022 was considered the busiest airport in the country, has now witnessed a betrayal of activity and empty space.

Dmitry Komarov, the host of the World Inside Out program, reveals this surprising airport landscape in a new series that highlights the unrealistic transformation of the once busy and tense airport premises.

The video footage shows different areas of the terminal without the slightest sign of movement or sound.

It would seem that the premises are ready to receive passengers at any time, there is enough lighting, and potted plants are growing. But now there is only hope for a return to normalcy.

Is it possible to reopen airports in Ukraine?

As you know, the issue of resuming civil aviation flights, which have been suspended since February 24, 2022, was actively discussed in Ukraine in the summer of 2023.

In turn, during his visit to the United States, the Head of the President's Office, Andriy Yermak, announced the possible opening of one of Ukraine's airports for civilian flights.

We remind you! Leaders in the global aviation industry have expressed their readiness to return to the Ukrainian aviation market, which may mark a new stage in the resumption of air traffic in the country. Read more about the resumption of flights with Ukraine here.
