ASUS AM5 Motherboards Get Next-Gen AMD Ryzen "Zen 5" Granite Ridge CPU Support In AGESA 1.1.7.0 BIOS 1

AMD's next-gen Ryzen "Zen 5" CPUs codenamed Granite Ridge have received the first support on ASUS's AM5 motherboards with the AGESA 1.1.7.0 BIOS.

ASUS AM5 AGESA 1.1.7.0 BIOS Update Silently Adds Next-Gen AMD Ryzen Zen 5 "Granite Ridge" CPU Support

It looks like motherboard vendors are starting to enable platform support for AMD's next-gen Ryzen CPU family codenamed Granite Ridge, which will utilize the Zen 5 core architecture. The latest information was spotted by HXL (@9550Pro) who references the latest BIOS updates that ASUS rolled out for its AMD X670E series motherboards. The new BIOS brings support for up to 256GB of DDR5 memory using the latest 64 GB modules, but more surprisingly, it also enables early support for Zen 5.

Following is the full list of ASUS AM5 (X670E) motherboards that have received the AMD AGESA 1.1.7.0 BIOS update (Credits: SAKEDISK @ ROG Forums):

This was confirmed in the latest AM5 SMU table published by Hardwareluxx, which keeps a check of all the latest updates within the AMD AGESA firmware. The latest AGESA 1.1.7.0 update also sees a drop from the ComboAM5PI naming scheme to FireRangePi. Now this is interesting since Fire Range is the codename for the mobility SKU family featuring the same Zen 5 desktop dies which we will soon see on the AM5 platform. The support is respective to the Granite Ridge "AMD Ryzen" family and expands the SMU to 98.58.0.

The AMD Granite Ridge family is also reported under the "00B40Fxx" ID, which should be useful as many engineering samples are expected to appear shortly. We have already seen 8-core and 6-core variants appear in leaks. Also, it looks like motherboard vendors already have early test samples of the Zen 5 "Ryzen" CPUs available with them, which are provided by AMD to enable early support for the chips such as BIOS tweaking. It helps AMD and its partners sort out early bugs and issues with the platform, so a refined version of the BIOS can be released to the public in the future as we get closer to launch.

Now if everything goes according to plan, we can get our first official unveiling of the AMD Zen 5 "Granite Ridge" Ryzen CPU family during Computex 2024, which is expected in early June. AMD is hosting the opening keynote of Computex, so that makes it the perfect place to do a grand unveil.

Not a lot about AMD's Zen 5 core architecture is known at the moment, but from what the company has officially stated, it will offer:

  • Enhanced performance and efficiency
  • Re-pipelined front-end and wide issue
  • Integrated AI and Machine Learning optimizations

PC builders buying an AM5 platform now are assured drop-in-compatibility with the next-gen AMD Ryzen CPUs. The company has committed to a 2025+ plan for its AM5 socket and as we have seen on the AM4 platform, AMD supports its desktop platforms more than Intel with a very strong 7-year+ dedication to its previous platform. The Zen 5 core architecture will also be coming to the next-gen Ryzen laptop family codenamed Strix Point which is also scheduled for a later 2025 CPU release plan.
