Airports in southwest Georgia will be receiving nearly $20 million as part of the CARES Act.

The CARES Act provides funds to increase the federal share to 100 percent for Airport Improvement Program (AIP) and supplemental discretionary grants already planned for fiscal year 2020.

This funding will support continuing operations and replace lost revenue resulting from the sharp decline in passenger traffic and other airport business due to the COVID-19 public health emergency. The funds are available for airport capital expenditures, airport operating expenses including payroll and utilities, and airport debt payments.

Two airports, Sylvester and Turner County, were both awarded $1,000.

10 other airports in Southwest Georgia were awarded $30,000:

  • Cook County Airport in Adel
  • Jimmy Carter Regional Airport in Americus
  • Decatur County Industrial Air Park in Bainbridge
  • Tom B David Field in Calhoun
  • The Camilla-Mitchell County airport
  • Crisp County-Cordele Airport
  • Dawson Municipal Airport
  • Douglas Municipal Airport
  • Moultrie Municipal Airport
  • Henry Tift Myers Airport in Tifton

However, the Valdosta Regional Airport will be receiving $1.1 million while Southwest Georgia Regional Airport in Albany will be getting just over $18 million.

The airport receiving the most money in the state? Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta will be awarded $338 million.

All of the funds going to Georgia airports as part of the act totals just over $410 million.
