Air-to-air in Herning

by Natalie Kjaergaard

We still have summer weather in September in Denmark, and it is unbelievably pleasant. Last Friday Ole Steen Hanssen invited me to Herning for an air-to-air photo session. I took a day off, and early morning was on my way to Jylland:

The weather was going to be nice whole weekend, and I invited my friend Anne to join me. We had planned a three-day tour, but then Anne got sick. When I received her message Friday morning, I didn’t know whether I’d fly back home from Herning, or would go somewhere else. I decided to take the day as it comes.

In Herning, there were lots of activities – many aircraft were flying, parachuting, you name it. I parked and went to say hello to the local pilots.

Niels was on duty in the tower:

Lotte – the flight instructor from the flying club – just sent one of her students solo. He did it very well, and they both were happy:

Steen and Henning took a Piper Cub, and we went out flying formation:

I flew together with Hardy, a very experienced pilot with military, private and commercial background:

HEART – Herning Art museum – from air. It is on my wish list for visiting:

We were shooting for about an hour, and it was great fun! One of the photos Ole Steen Hansen took of me and Hardy:

Steen is a well-known photographer and writer in Denmark; check out his web site http://www.steen-media.dk/. Besides writing for several magazines, Steen has also published many fascinating books. Before we met in person, I had been to a couple of his lectures that I found very interesting.

Back in Herning, they parachuted non-stop:

I watched their practice accompanied by my favourite Queen songs from the hangar:

Herning was definitely a nice place to be!

I was close to Thy, an area in Northern Jylland, where my friend Lene lives. I called Lene, and was welcomed to spend a weekend in their home. It was too late to land in Thisted, so I went to the Morsø gliding club on the island of Mors, where Lene would later pick me up from:

Lene and I studied software development together, in our younger years. We were the only girls in the class, and quickly became best friends. We haven’t seen each other for ages, and I was so happy going to see Lene and her family again!

Sallingsund Bridge, 1717 metres long, that crosses Salling Sund between the Salling peninsula of Jylland and the island of Mors where I was heading to:

Lene was already waiting at the aerodrome. After giving a big hug, I took a photo of her in the evening sun:

Vilsund bridge – and we were on our way to Lene’s house somewhere near Hundborg:

At home, Lene’s family waited with a nice dinner. We went early to bed, as we had great plans for the following day.
