Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. Bound by Bayntun-Riviere in full red calf, gilt rules on the boards, raised bands on the spine, morocco spine labels, marbled end papers and all edges gilt, cloth covers bound in at the rear. A very handsome production, likely mid-20th century. Expertly rebacked with the original spine laid down. Map with a short tear professionally closed. First issue with the following points: p.10 - "Bamamgwato"; p.122 3rd line up - "let twins to live"; p. 307 footnote, second to last line - "wrod." Ads dated 5 G. 8.85. One of approximately 1000 first issue copies. H. Rider Haggard's influential Victorian adventure tale. King Solomon's Mines follows the adventure of Sir Allan Quatermain, who ends up discovering the lost civilization of Kukuanaland. (Indeed, the book is thought to have been the inspiration for the entire genre of "Lost World" science fiction -- and influenced writers as diverse as HP Lovecraft and Michael Crichton.) Even though Haggard was inspired to write the book because of a wager with his brother - and finished it in less than four months - King Solomon's Mines would prove to be a best seller. "Mr. Haggard has little prestige on this side of the water, but it will be unjust if "King Solomon's Mines" does not bring him renown" (Contemporary New York Times Book Review). Near Fine.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. A. C. Michael (illustrator). 1st American. Rare Advance printing of the First American edition. With 1911 on title page rather than 1912. Only one other such copy has been recorded (see below). Although the publication date of the first US edition is Oct. 27, 1911 according to McKay and Scott, no copies were offered for sale until 1912. This copy differs in two other ways from the first US edition dated 1912; there is no printer's logo on the copyright page, and the printer's info is printed on one line rather than two. According to Scott 57A, a copy with the 1911 date on the title page resides in the Library of Congress, likely submitted by the publisher. Haggard bibliographer Bradford M Day [Bibliography of Adventure, Denver, 1964 page 82] states "A copy was deposited in the Library of Congress in 1911, but the book was not offered for general sale until 1912." It is also possible that a couple of advance copies bearing the 1911 date were printed as a publisher's trial printing/binding copies. Recently, a collector has written and sent picture that he owns a copy .so now there are three. In dark red cloth, lettered in gilt on spine and cover and with the design with a swan pierced by arrows inscribed on the front cover. Four full page color illustrations including the frontispiece by A. C. Michael. Scott 57A: Whatmore F37 (6d). New York: Doubleday, Page & Co. (1911), 351 pages. VG with some soil spots to lower front cover, shallow chips to a couple of pages fore edges. Damp stain on title page.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Here is an instant collection of 39 Tauchnitz editions of H. Rider Haggard Novels. Comprised of both hardback and softback editions. There are 21 hardbacks; 19 in original publisher's binding(!) and 2 rebound. There are also an additional 18 softbacks. Overall a great looking group, almost all are in VG condition; many of these are very rare. All are listed in the Whatmore bibliography. Lengthy details below, and please inquire for additional needed info or more pics. Likely the largest Tauchnitz grouping of Haggard's in the US. The following 19 hardbacks are in the publisher's original binding of red paper boards over red cloth spine with spine lettered in gold and decorated in brown and black, cover stamped with publisher's design in blind, top edge stained red, and with beige end papers. All in VG or better condition and have slight forward lean [from stacking], modest wear and/or fading, and may have names or bookseller pencils on prelims. Any major defect will be mentioned. Some are first printings and others are reprints as can be denoted from the Editions in print page, and so I am listing the copyright dates as well as the quantity of titles listed to give a better idea of the printing. King Solomon's Mines T2386 [1886, 35 titles], She in two volumes T2445/2446 [both 1887, 34 titles], Jess in two volumes T2451/2452 [1887, 29 titles], The Witch's Head in two volumes T2482/2483 [1887, 17 titles], Maiwa's Revenge T2530 [1888, 23 titles], Cleopatra in two volumes T2592/2593 [1889, 27 volumes], Allan Quatermain in two volumes T2742/2743 [1887, 33 titles], Dawn it two volumes T2825/2826 [1892, 13 titles, 1" cloth split at top of spine on V1], Ayesha in two volumes T3848/3849 [1905, 29 titles], The Way of the Spirit in two volumes T3883/3884 [1906, 30 titles], Red Eve T4287 [1911, 33 titles]. Also another set of Ayesha lacking half title pages and rebound in maybe white calf, good condition but kinda shabby with toning, foxing, and slightly warped boards. The paperbacks average VG condition with varying degrees of paper toning and spine creases, edge wear, and small tears or a bit of over separation. They mostly have a publisher's catalog or list of latest editions at rear which I will denote along with any notable defects. She [only Vol. 1 of the two volume set, T2445 [1887, May 1919, ink mark on cover], The Witch's Head in two volumes T2482/2483 [1887, September and July 1902], The Wizard T3191 [1897, Feb. 1914], Doctor Therne T3336 [1899, Feb. 1899, ink spots on cover], Swallow in two volumes T3355/3356 [1899, Autumn 1920], Black Heart and White Heart T3440 [1900, Aug. 1900, sticker and soil on cover], Ayesha in two volumesT2849/3850 [1905, Sept and Nov 1922, owners stamp on 1st page dated 1923], The Lady of Blossholme T4158 [1909, My 1924], Red Eve T4287 [1911, July 1913, tape at spine ends], Child of Storm T4391 [1913, Feb 1913, spine fully taped], Wisdom's Daughter T4602 [1923, May 1923], Queen of the Dawn T4686 [1925, May 1925], The Treasure of the Lake T4755 [1926, Dec 1926, 1st signature a bit loose].

Unbound. Condition: Fine. Manuscript. None, None, 1906-1909. Manuscript. Unbound. French translations of three of HRH's novels. All translated around the time of their respective first English publications, and presumably in the translator's hand (or their secretary). The translator is not named. HRH was translated into French in the 1880 and 1920s, but nothing in the 1900s, so the assumption is that it isn't one of those translators (Lemaire, Benoit, Lebouchere). A mystery to be solved. There's nothing to suggest these were authorised translations either. Either way, it appears that they remain unpublished in this form. I can find only a French translation for Ayesha, and that is a somewhat recent publication. It's hard to speculate as to the purpose for which these were intended, though given the span between the translations someone was likely preparing them for publication. (1) Ayesha. 355pp autograph both sides, lacking pp235-254. 28th September 1905, Paris. (2) Benita. 270pp autograph both sides, appears complete. Dated 11th May 1906, Paris (3) Les Rois Fantomes [The Ghost Kings]. 344pp autograph both sides, appears complete. Dated 17th June 1908, Paris. (4) 14pp autograph mss, seems to be the same hand but may be unrelated to HRH - I can't find any title of Haggard's that meets the translation (though I admit I may be misrepresenting the French on this one). Tantalisingly, there's a name with the 1907 date at the end of 'Ed Schroder' or similar. Condition is fine, some toning and a little foxing but remarkably well preserved overall. [9243, Hyraxia Books]. 1906-1909.
