Household cockroaches of Quetta city as reservoir for infectious pathogenic bacteria2017 •
This study makes an assessment on the role of cockroaches as potential carriers of pathogenic microorganisms. Current research is based on isolation, biochemical conformation and antimicrobial susceptibility tests. Totally, 191 household cockroaches were collected and identified as Blata orientalis, Blattella germanica and Periplaneta americana. A total of 10 Gram positive and negative species were isolated from their external surfaces and in the gastrointestinal tract. Percentage prevalence of contaminations for isolates were found higher in P. americana (35.6%) than B. orientalis (32%) and least in B. germanica (21.6%). The highest percentage of isolates was recorded in female (55.6%) then male (33.6%) cockroaches. The most abundant and common bacterial species belonged to Escherichia coli (80%), while Salmonella spp. (55%) was recoded as the least isolated specie. The ciprofloxacin and colistin sulphate antibiotics were recorded as most effective drugs against all isolates. The c...

Bacteriological and Mycological survey of domiciliary cockroach in Owo, MetropolitanThe presence of cockroaches in the home can raise safety concerns. Dirty behavior and presence, especially where food is stored or processed, can cause it to emerge as a mechanical vector of various food-derived pathogenic microorganisms. Cockroaches can carry pathogenic microorganisms on their surface, ingest pathogens through contaminated food, and infect humans by mechanical means. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of pathogenic and fungal infections transmitted by cockroaches and whether these bacteria were susceptible or resistant to commonly selected antibiotics. A total of 105 cockroach samples were collected from different households in Owo, 35 each from toilets, kitchens and shops. Bacteria and fungi were separated from the outer and inner surfaces of the cockroach by internal and external cleaning. The coliform enumeration was performed according to the Miles and Misra method. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was also performed using the disc diffusion method. Escherichia coli was mainly found on the outer surface of cockroaches collected in toilets and kitchens, and Pseudomonas erginosa, which was most frequently seen 14 times, was mainly found on the outer surface of cockroaches collected in stores. E. coli is mainly isolated from the inside of cockroaches collected in toilets, stores and kitchens. Proteus vulgaris, Kleb. Pneumonia was the second most common bacterium isolated from the inside of cockroaches collected in the kitchen. Candida albicans had the highest amount of fungi isolated from the outer surface of cockroaches collected from toilets, stores, and kitchens at 24, 19, and 21. Proteus vulgaris, isolated from both the inner and outer surfaces of the collected cockroach, was completely resistant to all commonly used antibiotics. Domestic cockroaches frequently carry pathogens on the outside and inside and some of these bacteria are resistant to common antibiotics and can be very difficult to treat.

Cockroach Associated Foodborne Pathogens: Distribution and AntibiogramCockroaches are among the most common pests in public dwellings and health facilities. Owing to their close association with man and all his surroundings they are consideredas potential carrier and transmitter of human diseases. In hospital, cockroaches are the possible vector of nosocomial infection, specially for the transmission of drug resistant bacteria. The aim of the present study was to identify the major cockroach species, to isolate common foodborne pathogens from cockroach and to determine the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of isolated bacteria. This casecontrol study was conducted on cockroaches captured from hospital, restaurants and houses in Dhaka city, from a period of July to December 2014. A total of 450 cockroaches were collected. Among these 300 cockroaches (150 from hospital and 150 from restaurants) were considered as case and 150 cockroaches from houses were enrolled as control group. All (100%) cockroaches were identified as Blattellagermanica. Examination...
