Abstract Gunda-Gundo Monastery is one of the unique architectural remains of the medieval period. The monastery was established around 1450 in remote gorges of eastern Tigray by the Stephanites, who faced prosecution from authorities in an attempt to reform the medieval Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The masonry architecture of the monastery complex specifically the main church building is in critical condition and in need of restoration. A team of professional from Mekelle University, Tigray-Culture and Tourism Agency and Cultural Association of Tigray has been conducting restoration work since last year. This paper discusses the principles and scope of work conducted in the restoration efforts. The paper also highlights the architectural significance, historical background and building condition of the monastery. In a way the authors believe this project will give a glimpse to the restoration trends and challenges in the country. Key Words: Monastery, Stephanites, Maqdas, Qedest, Restoration
