objective: To carry out a retrospective evaluation on the characteristics of dental occlusion in children and adolescents who were referred for polysomnography due to complaints about snoring and sleep disorders. subjects and Methods: In the present descriptive study, out of the 101 patients who were referred for polysomnographic evaluation (PSG), 60 patients (45 male and 15 female) were consecutively evaluated. The instruments used in the evaluation were clinical data, medical records, and PSG. results: The sample average age was 9.2±4.7 years, and the BMI was 21.0 ± 7.7 kg/m2. According to the PSG, the population evaluated showed the following sleep abnormalities: OSAS was detected in 65% (n=39) of the subjects, snoring in 18.33% (n=11), and contractions of the mentonian region muscles in 26.66% (n=16). According to the clinical evaluation, 49 of the patients showed oral breathing; Class I occurred in 21.66% (n=13) of the patients, Class II in 68.33% (n=41), and Class III in 10% (...

Objective To study the incidence of mouth breathing and its association with sleep disorders, dental caries, malocclusion and deleterious oral habits, in children. Material and Methods 152 children (6 to 9 years), of both genders, were invited to perform clinical evaluation of the oral cavity and the application of the OSA-18. Results 89 presented mouth breathing (MB), being 45% with malocclusion, 56% with dental caries, 38% with tooth loss, 51% with bruxism and 52% with the habit of sucking finger or pacifier, compared to 40%, 40%, 21%, 27% and 43%, respectively, in the 63 children with nasal breathing (NB). 35 MB showed moderate to high risk for OSAS, while only 8 of the children showed moderate risk. The average score of OSA-18 was 50 (MB:57/NB:40), with 29 (19%) children showing moderate risk. Among these, 74% presented mouth breathing, 26% malocclusion, 61% dental caries, 35% tooth loss, 42% bruxism and 55% sucked finger or pacifier, and in the 14 (9%) with high risk, they were 100...

Associations between sleep-disordered breathing symptoms and facial and dental morphometry, assessed with screening examinationsChronic snoring is considered abnormal in a pediatric population. This disorder is often attributed to enlarged tonsils and adenoids, but multiple anatomic obstructions should also be considered. Facial and dental morphometry associations with various sleep-disordered breathing symptoms were investigated at an orthodontic clinic. Parents or guardians were asked to complete a 4-part questionnaire on behalf of their children (n = 604; <18 years of age), including medical and dental history, bruxism and temporomandibular disorder habits, sleep and daytime behavior, and sleep duration and quality. All subjects underwent a clinical screening assessment by the same orthodontist to identify standard dental, skeletal, functional, and esthetic factors. In contrast to sleep-disordered breathing or sleep apnea in adults, which is predominantly associated with obesity, sleep-disordered breathing symptoms in this pediatric cohort were primarily associated with adenotonsillar hypertrophy, morp...

Sleep-disordered breathing and orthodontic variables in children—Pilot study2014 •
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a clinical disorder within the spectrum of sleep-related breathing disorders (SRDB) which is used to describe abnormal breathing during sleep resulting in gas exchange abnormalities and/or sleep disruption. OSA is a highly prevalent disorder with associated sequelae across multiple physical domains, overlapping with other chronic diseases, affecting development in children as well as increased health care utilization. More precise and personalized approaches are required to treat the complex constellation of symptoms with its associated comorbidities since not all children are cured by surgery (removal of the adenoids and tonsils). Given that dentists manage the teeth throughout the lifespan and have an important understanding of the anatomy and physiology involved with the airway from a dental perspective, it seems reasonable that better understanding and management from their field will give the opportunity to provide better integrated and optimize...

The characteristics of dental occlusion in patients with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea in Saudi Arabia2018 •
To evaluate characteristics of dental occlusion among non-obese Saudi adult patients suffering from moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea(OSA). Following ethical approval, a cross-sectional study was conducted at Sleep Disorders Center, King Khalid University Hospital, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, between January and March 2017. Non-obese adult Saudi patients with moderate/severe OSA (apnea-hypopnea index more than 15) and without history of malocclusion or edentulism were included with an estimated sample size of 50. Demographic details and severity of OSA as diagnosed by polysomnography were recorded. Characteristics of dental occlusion, namely molar, canine and incisor relationship, overjet, overbite, crossbite and arch form were obtained through calibrated examiners (kappa 0.81). Descriptive statistical analysis and Chi-square test, with 95% significance level (p less than 0.05), were used to identify relationships between the severity of OSA and characteristics of dent...

Prevalence of malocclusion in preschool and primary school children with habitual snoring and sleep-disordered breathing2011 •
Our research aimed to find out whether it was possible to establish a correlation between instrumental polysomnographic variables in children with Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) and their clinical dentofacial records. 197 children, 116 (59%) male and 81 (41%) female, age range 0 to 12 years, with a clinical history highly suggestive for SDB were enrolled. All patients underwent full-night Poly-Mesam examination and a specific clinical orthodontic evaluation. A comparison between polysomnographic variables and clinical orthodontic variables was made. OSAS can not be diagnosed by the paediatric dentist only by performing a single clinical orthodontic examination of oral cavity, but a polysomnography is essential and, if this should point out any pathology referring to SDB, a cranial lateral cephalometry will then be required.
