At least 100 flights were canceled on Jan. 3 following the fatal collision between a Japan Airlines Co. passenger jet and a Japan Coast Guard aircraft at Haneda Airport in Tokyo’s Ota Ward.

JAL said it canceled 44 domestic flights to and from Haneda, while All Nippon Airways Co. grounded 54 domestic flights, including five at other airports.

ANA also canceled one Haneda-involved international flight.

The decisions will affect 19,000 passengers.

Most of the cancellations were for morning flights. The number could increase depending on the situation at Haneda.

On the evening of Jan. 2, the JAL jet attempted to land at Haneda Airport but collided with the JCG plane on the runway, causing both aircraft to burst into flames.

All 379 passengers and crew members on the JAL plane escaped before the fuselage was consumed by the fire.

But five people aboard the Coast Guard plane were killed.

The plane was scheduled to fly to an air base in Niigata Prefecture to provide relief supplies for victims of the Noto Peninsula earthquake.
