Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has initiated the construction of the Netherlands’ largest car rental facility, known as the Car Rental Service Centre. This new centre will house approximately 2,500 vehicles and unite the five largest car rental companies at the airport under one roof. The facility will also feature 17,000 square metres of solar panels, demonstrating Schiphol’s commitment to encouraging car rental companies to transition to electric vehicles.

The Car Rental Service Centre is being developed on the site of the former P4 car park, covering a total area of 40,000 square metres. It will consist of five buildings for vehicle maintenance, repair, and washing, all topped with a large roof fitted with solar panels. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

Schiphol is making strides in electric mobility by investing in these new electric facilities. The solar panels will generate a substantial amount of electricity, equivalent to the annual energy consumption of approximately 1,000 households. Moreover, the new infrastructure will have the capacity to charge more than 300 electric cars simultaneously, aligning with Schiphol’s sustainability goals for airport traffic.

The airport’s aim is to make electric car usage to and from Schiphol Airport a commonplace occurrence. Car rental companies, including Hertz, Sixt, Europcar, Enterprise, and Avis/Budget, will relocate to Schiphol North upon completion of the Car Rental Service Centre, but this change will not affect customers, who will still conveniently pick up their rental vehicles close to the terminal.
