Paraguay updates Asunción airport expansion works

Paraguay's civil aviation authority Dinac provided an update on a new terminal for Asunción's Silvio Pettirossi airport.

After starting minor expansion works at the airport's northern wing, which require 25bn guaraníes (US$4mn), Dinac's head Edgar Melgarejo told state news agency IP the contract to draft the new terminal's design will be tendered next month.

Once the design and the rest of the project is approved, the tender for construction will be launched in December, and the contract is expected to be awarded during the first quarter of 2020.

The new terminal, which will leave the airport with two runways, should be finished two years after awarding the contract, the report said.

Following a failed US$149mn PPP tender for the airport's modernization, it was decided that the new terminal will be financed with Dinac resources.

In the meantime, the aviation authority plans to further expand the existing terminal.

The works on the northern wing are expected to be finished in four to five months, and later a similar expansion will be carried out at the southern wing.
