(Bloomberg) -- An Air Canada passenger flight from Madrid is circling over central Spain as it prepares for an emergency landing after suffering damage following takeoff.

Flight AC837 bound for Toronto aborted its voyage to Canada, a spokeswoman for airport operator AENA said by phone.

“The flight experienced an engine issue shortly after take-off,” Air Canada said in a statement. “A tire also reportedly ruptured on take-off, one of 10 on this model of aircraft.”

The Boeing 767-300 has 128 passengers on board and is circling the airport to use up fuel and lighten the aircraft for landing, the company said. It is designed to operate on one engine.

An aircraft from the Spanish Air Force has taken off to accompany the flight until it lands, El Pais newspaper reported.

Fire and ambulance crews were preparing for the landing, Madrid’s regional emergency services department said in a tweet.
