Song Performed by Colombia's Sebastián Yatra Shortlisted for the Oscars

“Dos Oruguitas” performed by Colombian singer-songwriter Sebastian Yatra with lyrics written by Lin-Manuel Miranda for the Disney animated feature film Encanto, was announced last week as one of the 15 songs that were shortlisted for the 94th Academy Awards, from 84 eligible titles in the category.

Set in the mountains of Colombia, the animated film is the story of the Madrigals, an extraordinary family who live hidden in in a charmed place called the Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift—every child except Mirabel. However, she soon may be the Madrigals last hope when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is now in danger.

Born in Medellin and raised in Miami, Yatra is a popular singer with numerous hits. “Dos Oruguitas” tells the story of two caterpillars growing to become butterflies and find their own future. Other Oscar shortlisted songs include “Be Alive” by pop superstar Beyoncé, written for King Richard, and “Guns Go Bang,” by her husband, Jay-Z, from the western “The Harder They Fall.”

Additionally, the soundtrack of Encanto by Latinx composer Germaine Franco, was also shortlisted in the Best Original Score category. The nominations for the 94th Academy Awards will be announced on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, and the winners will be announced at a ceremony on Sunday, March 27, 2022.
