Japan Airlines plane in flames at Tokyo's Haneda Airport; Airbus sends team to probe collision
A Japan Airlines plane faced a harrowing ordeal on Tuesday, December 2, at Tokyo's Haneda Airport when it erupted in flames on the runway following a possible collision with a Coast Guard aircraft. All 379 passengers and crew members on board managed to evacuate safely.

Airbus later confirmed that one of its A350-900 aircraft, operated by Japan Airlines, was involved in a tragic accident during its flight JAL 516 from Sapporo New Chitose Airport to Haneda International Airport. The incident occurred shortly after 17:47 local time on January 2, 2024.

"The A350 collided with a DHC-8 aircraft at landing in Haneda. The Japanese authorities have since confirmed that sadly five of the six people on board the DHC-8 did not survive. The exact circumstances of the event are still unknown," Airbus informed in a statement.

The pilot, who managed to evacuate, is said to be in critical condition with severe injuries.

Additionally, Airbus has announced its commitment to providing essential technical assistance to the investigative bodies overseeing the case and dispatching a team of specialists to assist the authorities.

"In line with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 13 recommendations, Airbus will provide technical assistance to the Bureau d’Enquêtes et d’Analyses (BEA) of France and to the Japan Transport Safety Board (JTSB) in charge of the investigation.

"For this purpose, Airbus is presently dispatching a team of specialists to assist the Authorities. Further updates will be provided as soon as consolidated information is available and Airbus is authorised to release them."

"Our concerns and sympathy go to the families, friends and loved ones affected by the accident," it said.

The dramatic scene unfolded as live footage on public broadcaster NHK captured the aircraft engulfed in flames, skidding down the tarmac despite the frantic efforts of rescue crews to bring the blaze under control. The severity of the situation prompted immediate emergency response measures.

A spokesperson from Japan Airlines had confirmed to Reuters that the flight had departed from Shin-Chitose airport on the northern island of Hokkaido.

In response to the emergency, Haneda airport has taken precautionary measures by closing all runways. The closure is expected to last until further investigations are carried out, and safety assessments are completed.

More about the Aircraft:

According to Airbus, the aircraft involved in the accident was registered under the number JA13XJ, with manufacturer serial number (MSN) 538. It was delivered to Japan Airlines directly from the production line on November 10, 2021, and was equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines.
