ONTARIO >> Low-cost Mexican carrier Volaris is adding nonstop flights from Ontario Airport to León, Guanajuato, starting next month.

In addition, Volaris has increased its frequency to Guadalajara from five times a week to daily, Ontario International Airport Authority CEO Kelly Fredericks announced at Thursday’s special meeting.

“We’re seeing our international traffic ramp up,” he said.

The new year-round service begins May 16, with Volaris offering the following nonstop flights:

• Volaris Flight 834 will depart BJX at 9:29 p.m. and arrive at ONT at 11 p.m. on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

• Volaris Flight 835 will depart ONT at 12:56 a.m. and arrive at BJX at 6:06 a.m. on Wednesdays and Sundays.

The Mexican-carrier will operate a 144-seat Airbus A319 aircraft for the León route. All departing flights will originate from Terminal 2 while arriving Volaris flights are at the airport’s international terminal.

Volaris first started serving ONT in 2014 with service to Guadalajara. Officials are lauding the route to León because it is one of the larger cities in the state of Guanajuato and increases the airport’s reach.

“The inauguration of routes like the new Bajío-Ontario route not only strengthens Volaris’ presence and position as the main Mexican airline in the U.S. market but also brings important advantages for a large number of customers on both sides of the border,” Holger Blankenstein, the carrier’s chief commercial officer, said in a statement.

Flights can now be booked through volaris.com, travel agents and other reservation systems.
