German Edge Cloud focuses efforts on AI in Smart City solutions

German Edge Cloud, part of the Friedhelm Loh Group, is devoting resources to the development of Bauhaus.MobilityLab, a project for sustainable logistics, energy, and mobility such as intelligent control of traffic or mobility as a service, the organization announced.

Bauhaus.MobilityLab operates like an incubator to develop AI-based solutions and approaches for mobility and energy transition. Scheduled to start in early 2020, the smart city project garnered attention from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) during the government agency’s AI innovation competition held in September 2019.

While the open, ICT-based platform and the AI services will be first rolled out as a test in Erfurt, Germany, future plans include expanding the concept to other cities. The system will be used to perform real-time AI analysis of traffic, energy and environment anonymous data. The information collected is analyzed to develop new products and services.

Part of the interdisciplinary consortium led by the Fraunhofer IOSB-AST Institute and the Bauhaus University Weimar, German Edge Cloud promotes an open ICT ecosystem where artificial intelligence can be leveraged to create innovative solutions.

“Important pillars of this project will be ensuring data sovereignty through local data storage and the operation of AI applications on an HPC infrastructure,” explains Michael Cornel, head of software development at German Edge Cloud, in a prepared statement.

German Edge Cloud provides turnkey edge data centers for industrial applications, which are an infrastructure offering it further wants to turn into a reusable platform for Smart City AI algorithms.

“The platform should offer the opportunity to flexibly reproduce the Smart City laboratory platform in other cities. By including the experiences of citizens, trust and competencies should be built up in the population at the same time. This can strengthen Germany as a business location,” explains André Theilig, business development manager at the German Edge Cloud.

In September, German Edge Cloud showcased why edge computing is a key technology for smart factories. The high data volume generated is an essential basis for new business models and for the implementation of many Industry 4.0 use cases.

In October, the Friedhelm Loh Group acquired German startup IoTOS. The new acquisition along with Rittal, German Edge Cloud, and Bosch Connected Industry, partnered to deliver a complete solution for edge cloud-based data management and data availability along the entire supply chain.
