This book is the result of four years Ph.D. research on the green mussel Perna viridis (Linnaeus 1758) from the high spat-fall coastal waters of Malacca, Peninsular Malaysia. Marine mussels form one of the most dominant cultivable species all over the world. They provide the highest conversion of primary producers (phytoplankton) to human food as a low-priced source of animal protein. Perna viridis occurs widely in shallow waters along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia allowing mussel seeds to be readily available for culture practice. Most of the previous studies tackling the collection of wild mussel seeds for aquaculture have concluded their findings based on few culture experiments, plankton and spat collection only. The finding of this book provides information on accurate determination of the dynamics of the gonadal development through histology, condition index, dynamics of the spat fall densities, population dynamics and growth rates of Perna viridis in the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The book is aimed as a technical reference for decision makers, fisheries resource managers, researches, professional and students.
