WILBUR J. JERMAN and JOHN C. EMMEL
Letter of agreement extending band leader Emmel's contract at
Jerman's radio station, KWJJ in Portland, for another year.
Typed Letter signed: "John C. Emmel", "Wilbur J. Jerman", 1
page, 8½x11. Portland, Oregon, 1949 August 5. Letter of agreement on
letterhead of KWJJ Radio, extending the music contract of John Emmel at the
Portland station for another full year. If Jerman and his partner, Mr. Egan,
were to sell the station within that time, the contract could be voided with 90
days' notice. WILBUR J. JERMAN (1901-2004), a self-taught radio
technician, entered radio broadcasting in 1922, designing and assembling
Portland station KQY and becoming its chief engineer. In 1925, he founded his
own station, originally operated from his home. This station received its
permanent call letters, KWJJ (Jerman's initials) in 1926. That same year,
Jerman began experimenting with television, and he added KWJJ-FM in 1946. Jerman
retired in 1952, and would have another half century to enjoy retirement.
JOHN C. EMMEL was an organist and orchestra leader. He issued several
recordings on the RCA label in the early 1950s, including "Oh Promise Me,"
"Because", Serenade", "Evening Star" and "Tales from the Vienna Woods". From the
collection of George Sanders, who would become a radio/TV host and program
manager at KWJJ. Lightly toned. Multiple mailing folds. Corners lightly creased.
Otherwise, fine condition.
