WAHIAWA, HAWAII (KITV4) - The overnight brush fire in Wahiawa is now contained after burning more than 500 acres of land in Central Oahu.
The fire was declared contained at 5:40 p.m. on August 17, 2023. Although the fire scorched approximately 450 acres of brush and trees, the HFD was able to stop the fire before endangering any structures or utility poles.
No injuries were reported.
Some people found it upsetting that there was another brush fire, this one on Oahu after the devastating fires on Maui.
“We started seeing smoke going up and ambulances. When it was dark, you could see the glow all over Wahiawa. I was scared to send my son to school because I didn’t know if it was going to get worse,” said Jade Mercado, Wahiawa resident.
Honolulu Fire Department sent out a helicopter to scope out the area Thursday afternoon.
The fire began Wednesday August 16th around 4 PM with 15 firefighters sent to the scene.
“The whole neighborhood was worried. Nobody is ever going to sleep on a fire ever again especially after what is happening on Maui,” said Kena Ewe, Whitmore Village resident.
No homes were threatened and no evacuations were ordered. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
