How can reflective listening help you better understand a client's spirituality?
Necessary but not sufficient. Reminds of the “Carl Rogers joke.” A client begins his session by saying: “My wife left me this morning; then my boss called and fired me; then, as I was leaving to come here, I accidentally ran over my dog.” The therapist says, “You’re having a terrible day.” The client goes to the window. “From the sixteenth floor, all those people look so insignificant, like me. Maybe I should just end it all.” The therapist says, “You’re considering suicide.” The client opens the window and jumps. The therapist goes to the window and says, “Splat.”
