According to the US National Weather Service, the Atlantic hurricane season peaks through August and September. The initial response in the immediate aftermath of a devastating storm is generally one of reconnaissance and restoring essential services. Vertical lift is the cornerstone of first response. Helicopters deliver clearance teams and essential equipment to reinstate damaged airfields, provide search and rescue support, move essential supplies, and provide eyes in the sky for relief coordination. The Caribbean island nations typically bear the full force of the Atlantic storms and taking 2017’s Hurricane Irma as an example, getting helicopters on scene quickly is a challenge. US and international vessels steamed for the worst-hit areas as soon as it was safe but needed to be close to launch helicopters. In 2016, the US Marine Corps demonstrated the reach and payload capability of the MV-22B Osprey, flying to Haiti well ahead of relief ships and helicopters in the wake of Hurricane Matthew. The Corps was back in action after Hurricane Irma in 2017. We’ve sized our Speeder high-speed VTOL aircraft to fit inside the Osprey’s cargo hold. Two or three Speeders will ‘stack’ inside along with their detachable flying surfaces, so a small force of MV-22Bs could land and have multiple Speeders assembled, fueled from their own tanks and ready to fly within minutes – the ultimate force multiplier.
