Following Anzac Day, we're shining a light on #AusNavy's history. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Leyte Gulf, where the Allied forces fought for the liberation of the Philippines in WWII. Of the more than 660 vessels that were amassed as part of the task force, among them were 13 Royal Australian Navy (RAN) ships, including the first #HMASArunta and #HMASWarramunga. RAN ships helped lay channel markers and shoal water buoys in San Pedro Bay, helped land troops on the undefended Panaon Island to the south, and took part in the bombardment of the main landing beaches at Tacloban and Dulag on Leyte Gulf’s western shore. Comprising multiple actions over several days, the Battle of Leyte Gulf was the largest naval battle in WWII.

The Naval Ode They have no grave but the cruel sea No flowers lay at their head A rusting hulk is their tombstone A'fast on the ocean bed. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. Join the Chief of Navy and the Warrant Officer of the Navy this Anzac Day as we remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. #LestWeForget

Congratulations to Chief Petty Officer Gavin Stevens MG on being awarded the Medal for Gallantry for his actions on the Al Faw Peninsula in Iraq, during Operation Falconer. Chief Petty Officer Stevens was commanding a tactical Explosive Ordnance Disposal patrol when a modified 200kg Destructor (DST) bomb was discovered. He demonstrated gallantry by successfully neutralising the mine, assuring the safety of others. His selfless courage in the service of our nation is an example of the calibre of #OurPeople. BZ.
