Barbie vs. Mexican Films: Attendance of Mexican Films in Cinemas in 2023 As a renowned director who wishes to remain anonymous, I find the title of this post to be somewhat humorous. However, it is also an issue that deserves attention. According to a promotional post by Cinepolis Media on LinkedIn, the expected attendance for the film "Barbie" in Mexico is 5,409,675. I am not sure how they arrived at this awfully specific number, but I do know that according to CANACINE, the total attendance for Mexican films in cinemas in 2022 was 6,400,000, while IMCINE reports on its annual report for 2022 the number: 6,188,725. These eerily similar numbers could be seen as either a death threat to Mexican cinema or a very cruel joke. Either way, it is clear that one film has the potential to draw in as many viewers as all of the Mexican films released in a year. I am still trying to understand what this means for the future of Mexican cinema in 2024. On the one hand, it is possible that the success of "Barbie" and the rest of the blockbusters of 2023 will lead to a decline in the number of people who see Mexican films and a corresponding avalanche of Mexican films dumped on streaming platforms. After all, why would someone go see a Mexican film when they can see a big-budget Hollywood film like "Barbie"? On the other hand, it is also possible that the success of "Barbie" will actually help Mexican cinema to mutate and rediscover itself along the way to be attractive for a theatrical experience. Only time will tell what the future holds for Mexican films in cinemas. However, one thing is for sure: the success of "Barbie" vs the rest of Mexican films should be considered a wake-up call for the Mexican film industry. #filmmakers #filmproduction #streaming #boxoffice #cinemexicano #moviles
