YCW 2024-2025 Campaign – less than 2 weeks The Young Canada Works 2024-2025 campaign is underway. This program is funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage (PCH), supporting the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment and Skills Strategy. All archival institutions, as well as libraries operating in English, can now apply online for short-term jobs for students (YCW in Heritage Organizations), and internships for graduates (YCW at Building Careers in Heritage) via the official YCW website (https://lnkd.in/d8YxhNU ). Deadline The application deadline for short-term student jobs (HO) and internships (BCH) is January 19, 2024. Government Priorities The Government of Canada is committed to strengthening diversity and inclusion in youth employment. It is important to note the government priorities for 2024-2025. Please note that the application assessment process will take into account the following priorities: - Indigenous employers (eligible projects); - projects aimed at Indigenous participants (Indigenous or non-Indigenous employer - youth who self-identifies as First Nations, Inuit, Métis and/or urban or non-affiliated Indigenous youth.); - projects focusing on Indigenous cultural heritage (Indigenous or a non-Indigenous employer); and - hiring youth that are part of equity-deserving groups (https://lnkd.in/d36HwwEX ). If you have already submitted your application and would like to make changes based on these government priorities, please contact us so that we can unlock your application promptly. Please visit CCA’s website (https://lnkd.in/dwdrRc93 ) for more information. If you have any questions concerning your application in the archival field, do not hesitate to contact Louise Charlebois at ycw_jct@archivescanada.ca. If you have any questions concerning your application as a library operating in English, do not hesitate to contact Kathleen Pond at ycw-cla@archivescanada.ca

CAN PAID INTERNSHIPS SAVE SOCIAL WORK? “Unfortunately, the consequences of unpaid internships persist long after graduation in the form of overwhelming student debt. In the U.S., the average starting salary for recent MSW graduates is only $47,000. Meanwhile, MSW students graduate with an average of $68,000-$76,000 in student loans, burdening social workers and their families for decades after graduation. Notably, Black and Latino/a/e/x students graduate with significantly more debt than their white counterparts, exacerbating racial disparities and perpetuating inequality within our workforce.” P4P Alumni Advisors Pilar O. B., and Elana Metz, MSW/MPH, share their thoughts in a blog for the 2023 #SSWWeek on the Global Social Service Workforce Alliance's website. To see what else they have to say, check out their post. https://lnkd.in/gGzvk3Wc #SSWWeek2023 #SocialServiceWorkforce #SocialServiceWorkers #SocialWork #P4P #PaymentForPlacements #UnpaidIsUnfair

Dropping out of school due to poverty is a widespread problem in Mexico. COVID-19 has made it worse. As one Mexican high school student said, “If I connect to classes I don’t work, and if I don’t work, at home we don’t eat”. Yet there is little help for teenagers to develop their employability, with only 3% of Mexican social media posts mentioning initiatives such as internships or skills training programs.
