I traverse Social Development and Academic spaces, exploring Social Justice, Migration, Labour, Caste, Poverty, Youth Empowerment, Climate, Subaltern histories, cultures, and folk songs.
There are times when you think that the only possible way to think 'out of box' is to think 'against the box'. Would ensuring that the guilty gets punished - without fail - be 'out of box' thinking? Do we need additional laws to ensure that institutions (including courts) are held responsible any time such dastardly acts are repeated? If yes, then can courts, OR concerned institutions, alone be entrusted with this task? How many suo motu cases has the Supreme C taken on this matter till date? Does this episodic awakening count as an act of 'out of box' thinking? How many lowered caste judges do we have in India, at all levels? Is there something the Supreme C could do about this across the country? Legal tools and structures are necessary but not enough. Good that the Supreme C has admonished the UGC, Rohith died in 2016, and Payal Tadvi in 2019! In a true democracy, no institution, no government, should be allowed such criminal inactions. https://lnkd.in/efeankMg
Calling the deaths of students from marginalised communities in institutions of higher learning a “sensitive matter” that required “out of the box thinking”, Supreme Court on Thursday directed University Grants Commission. Directive of Hon’ble Supreme Court is laudable in the light of stirring suicide note of Rohith,he left behind which defined the prevailing contempt towards students admitted against reserved seats. Rohith’s claim that”never was a man treated as a mind”has been proved right from controversies which erupted after his death. #students #university #supremecourt#payal tadvi# #rohith vemula#

Amazing thoughts by the Think Tank of I.N.D.I.A Let's try to assess it. As per the post, out of 122 suicides, 68 belongs to SC, ST and OBC which means rest 54 belongs to General Category making it highest among all categories and General has no reservation. Around 19000 students from reserved categories drop out, correct since reservation doesn't work after getting admission. Cutoff for reserved categories is much lower than general sometimes it's half of general and that's how the SC and ST gets admission, but can't cope up since education level is better and if reservation is removed, most of these students will never be able to enter these institutions. One wrong fact, 70% population is not SC, ST and OBC, it's 62% and among poor General Category has 20% poverty rate, highest among any category, so it's General Category which is poor not SC, ST or OBC. Also, please check how many Supreme Court Judges are from Reserved Categories, how many VP, Presidents and heads are from reserved categories in each government department and institutions, then only clear picture will be visible.
AND IT CONTINUES... Over 70 % of India's population belongs to the Scheduled caste, Scheduled Tribes and Other backward classes. It's distressing that caste system that originated some 3000 years back, is still prevalent in India, more surprisingly in the " premier" educational institutions like IITS'S, IIM'S, AIIMS etc. What is caste discrimination in education? Students belonging to lower castes, especially Dalits, are often ostracized from the education system as they are deemed to be unworthy of education. DATA ON SUICIDES Of 122 student suicides in top institutions and central universities between 2014 and 2021, according to government data, 68 were from backward communities, or 55%, among these, 24 were from SC communities, three belonged to the ST category, and 41 were from OBCs. UNJUST REPRESENTATION In 2021, the union ministry of education said in Lok Sabha that across 45 central universities, there was only one vice-chancellor from an SC community, and one from an ST community. This was despite the fact that 7.5% of seats in central institutions are reserved for STs, 15% for SCs, 27% for OBCs, and 10% for the economically weaker sections (EWS). BETTER TO REMAIN POOR THAN TO SEEK HIGHER EDUCATION The Union government recently revealed that over 19,000 SC, ST and OBC students had dropped out of all central universities, Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) between 2018 and 2023. STORY Article 14 has recently released the Data that highlights the extent of discrimination that's prevalent in the IITS'S in India.

Last 2 paras of my op-ed - Discrimination in faculty appointments cuts many ways (unpublished) Since the discussion here has emerged from the NIT-Hamirpur story of favouring those with PhDs from the world’s top-ranking institutions and India’s best institutions, it is pertinent to point out that India’s universities often discriminate against those with PhDs from the best universities in India and abroad. By far the most common argument used to discriminate against such applicants is that they are a poor fit for that particular university. Discrimination in faculty appointments – on the grounds of caste, gender, PhD-awarding institution and others - is one of the biggest failings of India’s higher education sector. Such discrimination commonly sacrifices merit in faculty appointments and is one of the main reasons – other than severely inadequate funding and the politicised governance of universities - why the quality of education has deteriorated at most of India’s public universities.

#milan is going to become a city for rich #students only? According to UDU (#association of #university #students), 29% of the Milan students struggles to pay #rents, #service charges and #utilities. This is above the #European average of 21% of the #students reporting that they are constantly worried about their finances, according to the recent #Student Living Monitor survey presented by The Class Foundation. in Milan, solutions as the relaunch of the #agreed rent #leases (so called 'contratti a canone concordato') or the #refurbishment of dismissed assets can help a lot to make #milan #inclusive again. #university #education #costofliving #pbsa #residentialrealestate #realestatedevelopment #rentalcaps

We're so pleased to see that the #UniversitiesAccord expert panel has acknowledged the harm caused by sexual assault and sexual harassment in Australia's university communities, identifying it as one of the urgent reform priorities for the #highered sector. We welcome Minister Jason Clare MP's commitment to addressing this issue. These are good first steps, but first steps that are long overdue. In the six years since the release of the Change the Course report, an estimated 85,800 students have been sexually assaulted within an Australian university context. 275 students will be added to that tally next week. And each week after that. The evidence is abundantly clear - universities can't be left to mark their own work when it comes to addressing sexual violence. We need urgent government intervention now, while the work toward longer-term reforms gets underway. https://lnkd.in/gu6TK_Es
